How to Find Thrift Store Goodies

I wasn't sure a drop waist dress was quite my style but I liked the color blocking and the casual but structured look of the dress. I gave it a try and I'm glad to have found yet another style that works for me. While it wasn't my idea of a thrift store score, it did turn out to be a great find.

Here's what I've found to be most helpful in getting the good stuff:

Explore Your Creative Side

Buy what you like. The affordable prices in thrift stores make it easy to get in touch with your creative side. Once you're buying the colors that catch your eye or the sequins that dazzle, you'll find a way to work them into your wardrobe. For the all black everything lovers among you, experiment with proportions and different textures.

Active Shopping

There's a lot of choices to be made. You have to find your size. You have to find your style. You have to edit. All before purchasing because there may not be a way to return your find. You're not going in to grab what the mannequin is wearing and be on your way. Therefore, take your time. Explore and carry your patience.

Frequent Shopping

The more you go the more you'll become familiar with the brands you love. You'll know what sizes could possibly fit your body. Plus, it's like there's a whole new crop to choose from with every trip. The more you go, the more you will find. The more you visit, the more trends you'll be able to spot no matter what decade they are from.

Find the Perfect

Perfect isn't always perfect. As you already know, thrift stores can be a cluttered mess. You find gems all over the place. Maybe your perfect fit crisp white button up is in the men's section and all it needs is a few darts at the waist. I would advise against bringing home a bunch of clothes that need mending but good "bones" are worth tailoring.

I love this dress and you look Fabulous. I always like to read your tips and DIY and as much as I love to shop, I just do not have the patience anymore for thrift shops. Keep smiling!

Do you ever thrift in the suburbs? They sometimes have really high end stuff at the Goodwill in Northbrook, and, another one is opening soon in my 'hood (Skokie). I also like the deals at Savers in Glenview....
