Photography For Bloggers Who Don't Have DSLR Cameras: Editing

Since I'm not a photographer and I don't have a DSLR camera, I rely heavily on editing programs to make my pictures look their absolute best. I use lighting tricks but sometimes the photos need a few more touches.

The Editing

I edit photos in PicMonkey or Google+'s photo editor. There are apps available for iPhone and android phones too.

Once I've chosen the picture I want to use, I crop, adjust exposure, and colors to my liking.

1. I tend to overexpose my pictures because lighter pictures look better and I'm trying to fade out what's going on outside of my window. Since I overexpose, I do some color adjustments to bring a nice brown back to my skin.

2. I don't always crop. It just depends on what's in the background that I don't want to be in the blog post picture. If I crop, I do so according to the "rule of thirds" lines that appear in the cropping editor. You can find them on cell phone and cameras too.

You want your focal point to fall in line with the dotted lines as they are more visually appealing than standing in the center of the shot.

3. Airbrushing is the last edit I make. I use it for a polished, natural look mainly on my face. I don't use it on my eyes or lips because it looks really weird. They blur out too much.

4. I save the photo as .png instead of .jpg because it's less grainy. I've heard this can slow down your blog's load time so I may go back to .jpg's again. Need to do more googling research.

5. When I upload the photo to the blog, I make the picture as big as possible. Using the entire width your template looks way better and folks don't have to squint to see what you are have on. Bigger is better! That's what she said.

Feel free to message me if you have questions. Again, I'm not an expert. I'm just a girl with a blog, a tripod, a work lamp, and a non dslr camera. Yet.

Oh my goodness, V looks like such a big girl in this last photo! I think it's the hair and the jeans. Eek!

I have the camera and don't know what the heck to do with it.

This is very helpful. I have the most basic camera ever but it does the job.
