{DIY} Old T-Shirt New Necklace + Giveaway

This shop has been compensated by #CollectiveBias and its advertiser. All opinions are mine alone. Thanks to Energizer #BringingInnovation for the first battery made of recycled materials. It certainly inspired me to turn old t-shirts into new necklaces.

DIY t-shirt necklace. Very easy! Great way to make something old into something new. #shop

I do my best to be good to the earth by reusing, reducing, and recycling as much as I can. I use my own bags when grocery shopping. I buy secondhand when I can. I seek out ways to reuse products around the house.  I seek out eco friendly products. I'm not perfect and I know there's more I can do. These are easy ways to make responsible choices.

Since becoming a parent, you know what we never seem to have enough of? Batteries! So many of V's toys and gadgets require batteries.  Therefore, we always keep a supply on hand. While picking up a new batch at Walmart, I spotted Energizer's new EcoAdvanced batteries in AA and AAA. They are the world's first battery made from recycled batteries and the longest lasting alkaline battery ever. Taking something old and making something new and innovative. I love it.

DIY T-Shirt Necklace

Following in Energizer's footsteps, I turned old t-shirts into new necklaces. Along with toys that require batteries, we also have an abundance of t-shirts.  How do they accumulate so fast?

As you already know, I love to refashion! I took a few of our faded or stained t-shirts and turned them into colorful neck candy. This is a super simple DIY and I ended up making quite a few. It only takes about 15 - 20 mins to complete.

Materials

- old or thrift store cotton or cotton blend t-shirts
- scissors or rotary cutter / mat

Note: T-shirts without side seams have a smoother finish. Tees with a little bit of graphics are ok. They won't curl as well though. The bigger the shirt, the longer the necklace.

Instructions

Step 1: Lay shirt flat against hard surface. Smooth out any wrinkles. Cut bottom hem off. Starting at the bottom, cut shirt into strips no more than an inch in width. I used the width of my finger as a guide and just eyeballed it.

Continue to cut strips until you reach the sleeves. T-shirts are very absorbent so you can reuse the top half as cleaning rags or add to scrap fabrics for another diy project.

Step 2: Gather all of your fabric strips in one hand and stretch using other hand. Pull until all of the edges have curled inward.

You may have to take a few loops and stretch them individually especially if working with a graphic tee.

Step 3: Take one of the fabric loops and make a knot around the rest to hold them all together. Spiral the excess fabric around the necklace and tie a knot at the other end. Tuck tail inside the spiral. Done!
