Iconic Grease Performed in the Great Outdoors

As a member of press, I was invited to view Serenbe Playhouse Presents Grease. Opinions are my own.

I've seen Grease many times but I've never seen it like this. I am so impressed with Serenbe Playhouse's season opener production of Grease. I ventured out to Chattahoochee Hills in the country for opening weekend of the fully immersive vintage drive in movie theatre performance.

I'm sure you know the plot but Grease is the the story of star crossed teenage lovers, Danny and Sandy. They fall in love over the summer and reconnect in the fall at Rydell High. Danny turns out to be a leather jacket wearing chick magnet bad boy and a little different from the Danny that Sandy remembers. Sandy is the syrupy sweet Sandra Dee like new girl in school.

I grew up watching the John Travolta / Olivia Newton John Grease movie every year on tv so I'm quite familiar with the story and consider it one of the classics. I was very excited to see it live. Serenbe Playhouse did not disappoint with this fully immersive live performance.
The open air theater was set up to look like a drive in theater complete with vintage marquee, a retro soda shop, and vintage cars in front of the stage which served as prime VIP seating.

While waiting for the performance to start, I watched vintage ads and announcements playing on the big screen and caught glimpses of Pink Ladies, T-Birds, and the nerdiest of nerds at Rydell High, Eugene. The actors were all in character before the show began doing a bit of improv. It was like getting a bonus show.

The musical started as soon as darkness hit with a vibrant rendition of the song "Grease". This is when I start to geek out because it's been a while since I've been to a musical and I've forgotten how exciting is it and even more special when you know all the songs. From the opening song until the curtain call, I sang along to all of my favorites including "Beauty School Dropout" "Grease Lightnin" and "We Go Together".

Micheal Stiggers as Danny and Randi Garza as Sandy paired very well and had great chemistry. I was happy to see love take flight figuratively and literally in the infamous Grease closing scene. The entire cast did an amazing job but I was absolutely in love with Julissa Sabino as Rizzo. She brought energy and attitude to the role of a high school baddie and Pink Lady In Charge.

Watching Grease outside under the stars was a lively and nostalgic trek into yesteryear. If you're in Atlanta, I highly recommend you catch it. Opening night sold out so I would not delay purchasing tickets online at www.serenbeplayhouse.com.

It's a great show for a moms night out or for teens and even if you want to treat yourself. I also recommend pulling out your true vintage fashion and fully embracing the immersive experience!

Performances start at 8pm, Wednesday to Sunday until April 16.

Have you seen Grease? What's your favorite part?
