As my closet is 90% thrift, the first item I choose from my closet is normally thrift but when Christmas (and my birthday) roll around I receive fresh new gifted threads which I have no problem with! I do still add a touch of thrift. I don't remember the last time I wore an outfit that didn't have a single thrifted item.
I know that everyone isn't thrift friendly or able to find great garments that match your style, size, etc., so adding an accessory is the perfect way to experiment with thrift fashion and incorporate it into your look:
Choose a piece from your wardrobe
My mama gifted me a fab black pleated mini for Christmas. She still sees me as a spring chicken and likes to by me short skirts. Skirts I wouldn't necessary buy retail or thrift for myself. Since I had this great new mini, I decided to wear it instead of letting it age in my closet which I've been known to do.

The skirt is great on its on but I thought to add a touch of thrift to it with a vintage brooch I got in my Savers thrift haul. It looks like a belt doesn't it? Now I've discovered a new way to way pins and brooches. I love vintage pins but never buy them fearing they would end up in the dark corner of my closet never to be seen again.Match (or mix) your colors
I knew I wanted to pair the skirt with red. I don't know why I neglect the color red so much. It's a great color and I continue to be surprised by how much of a statement it makes without even trying. My skirt is black so matching was simple but you don't necessary have to match. Pinterest and blog are the perfect inspiration for going the mixed print / unmatched look.Mind your proportions
I thought a red sweatshirt would pair well but I was wrong. I wasn't getting enough waist definition. The red snakeskin (.75 thrift score) blouse turned out to me the winning combination with waist defining front and back darts.Add more accessories
Naturally tights because it's friggin cold in this city and I capped off the look with yet another statement accessory - rhinestone striped booties. No more jewelry. My many textures are enough but piling on some thrift store jewelry would certainly work!
THRIFT vintage Nicola snakeskin print blouse - Prada purse - vintage JJ lion brooch GIFT Mimi Chica pleated mini RETAIL Falke tights - Betsey Johnson booties

Like the Prada bag? It's for sale in The Thriftanista Closet on eBay. Check it out!
Are the supersized pictures too much? I'm still learning my new camera lens.

LOVE that bag! You scored big with it! I think your Mom knows best. You rock the short skirts, and those rhinestone booties are colorful and fun.
