Iris Apfel is My Fashion Spirit Animal

I didn't necessarily need an alpaca poncho for my closet but I'm glad it's there. This is why I can't do a capsule closet. I like my oddball pieces. They help me tap into my inner Iris Apfel. She's my fashion spirit animal and she inspires me with her wise words and stylish ways.

If you didn't already know, Iris is a 94 years young fashion beast with fierce thrift shopping skills and a fearless attitude. Today's outfit reminds me of why I love her style so much.

I was apprehensive about the poncho with the weird animals all over it. Bought it anyway and I love it. I was unsure about the wolf earrings when I thrifted them but they tickled my fancy and I bought them and the matching bracelet too.

Iris is all about expressing your personal style any way you want to.  Do it your way and you'll always look fabulous. Her words that inspire me the most are:

"I love to dig and search and find. And if I’m shopping…You know, if it’s a piece of fabric, I listen to the threads. It’s not intellectual at all. The price is nothing. It’s the emotional content: I have to feel it in my gut. I don’t know how to explain it other than that."

"I'm a hopeless romantic. I buy things because I fall in love with them. I never buy anything just because it's valuable. My husband used to say I took a piece of fabric and listen to the threads. It tells me a story... I have to get a physical reaction when I buy something. A coup de foudre — a bolt of lightning. It's fun to get knocked out that way!"

"I don't have any rules, because I would only be breaking them, so it's a waste of time."

"If there was a choice on spending a lot of money on accessories or dress, I always chose accessories. I think jewelry can change an outfit more than anything else."

"Life is gray and dull; you might as well have a little fun when you dress."

"I say, dress to please yourself. Listen to your inner muse and take a chance. Wear something that says 'Here I am!' today."

"You have to look in the mirror and see yourself. If it feels good, then I know it’s for me. I don’t dress to be stared at, I dress for myself.”

"There’s no how-to road map to style. It’s about self-expression & above all, attitude."
