Why Jackson Mississippi Tops My Travel List

One of my goals in the new year is to do more traveling. Living in the south definitely has travel perks. You can easily drive to a number of different states for weekend excursions. I definitely haven't taken full advantage of this since landing in Georgia. First stop on my travel list will be to Jackson, Mississippi -- City With Soul.

Jackson is an up-and-coming city that's just perfect for a weekend of exploration and fun activities including great food, live music, art, history and more. The Visit Jackson docu-series has peaked my interest and has me super excited to discover the City with Soul for myself.

My top reasons for adding it to my travel list include:

Jackson, Mississippi is the home of jazz vocalist Cassandra Wilson. I'm a big fan of her music. I love her voice and was fortunate enough to see her live when I lived in Chicago. There's a marker for her middle school on the Mississippi Blues Trail along with a wealth of blues heritage stories and legendary recording studios like Ace and Trumpet Records.

You can find live music any night of the week. The Central Mississippi Blues Society website hosts a calendar of events that will point you in the right direction for authentic live blues around the city.

Naturally a pit stop at the Mississippi Children's Museum. It's the perfect way to keep little ones engaged. Since becoming a parent, we usually make a pit stop at a children's museum. Historic tours are fun for Edward and I but Violet needs a little mini vacation from the vacation to burn off energy.

Food. Food. And more Food. Especially soul food. The food in Jackson is influenced by and reminiscent of grandma's sacred recipes while also utilizing cooking techniques learned in world-class culinary schools.

A vacation isn't a vacation without a little shopping. I love to travel thrift. I like to absorb a city and get into the culture by visiting thrift and vintage stores. Jackson is home to N.U.T.S (Neat Used Things for Sale) which sells surplus donated items not needed by Good Samaritan clients. They have two locations plus a warehouse where the prices are rumored to be 'nuts'! Ha.

You can find the entire Visit Jackson: City With Soul docu-series here. I'm sure you'll find Jackson to be a worthy travel destination for you and the entire family.

Do you have a travel list? What destinations are on it?
