10 Questions for a Thriftanista - Rebecca

Happy Friday! It's time to feature another fabulous Thriftanista. This month is thrift and natural hair blogger and vlogger Rebecca of Secrets of Essence. I virtually met her via the BLM: Blogger Like Me Facebook group. I love "meeting" new thrifting buddies. Let's get started!

Name Rebecca
Location Los Angeles, CA

Favorite places to shop?

I love shopping at the Goodwill, Savers, the Old Navy clearance section, Target and Ross (they have great dresses & shoes) For Jewelry: I browse different boutiques and random stores.

What are some of your favorite finds?

My favorite finds have been a black bomber jacket with zip detailing, a black lace top, a pair of black pumps (Target), and a black blazer.

thrift style

How would you describe your style?

I would describe my style as simple. At times I will dress business causal. Other times I am a hoodie & dunks kind of girl. Most often I am a t-shirt and flats person. I love a cute shirt, a long necklace, some nice fitting jeans and some flats. I love a simple style.

10 minutes to shop what aisle do you run to?

This is a hard one! 10 minutes to shop I would hit the shoes first, then dresses and the jewelry section. Spending 3 minutes at shoes, 5 minutes at dresses and 2 minute on jewelry. If I score in all three places I can come out with a complete outfit in 10 minutes.

questions for a thriftanista

How much of your closet is thrifted?

Hmmm maybe about 90% of my closet is thrifted. Every time I purchase an item I pull out an item.

Why do you thrift?

For the deals and the unique finds. The thrift store provides me with access to one of a kind pieces. I am not one that likes to be in line with the fashion world. I wear what I like. I wear what looks good on me. I also donate back to Goodwill and thrift shops I frequent.

Do you have a thrifting budget?

At times I try to follow a shopping budget. I try to spend no more than $20. I also have a budget on certain items. I will not pay more than $10 for a pair of shoes. (I paid $20 for a pair of shoes I have never worn. Never again!) I will not pay more than 7.99 for a dress.

What's your thrifting "white whale"? A rare find that can be found or not found.

A white whale for me has been camo pants or a good camo jacket. I have been searching for a nice pair of camo pants to alter and pair with a black blazer or jacket. No luck yet but I haven’t given up.

secrets of essence

Do you have thrift tips you'd like to share?

Yes! I recently posted a few on my blog. The main two I would suggest to everyone is to go in with a solid idea of your style. Check Pinterest and google for other outfit ideas. I am constantly searching for inspiration and ideas.

Where can we see more of your amazing finds?

I have recently started blogging about my finds and I post my outfits on Instagram.  Blog: Secrets of Essence, IG: naturealessenceFacebook, and Youtube

Something I always try to do while thrifting is to watch out for dry clean only or hand wash. I don't have the money for dry cleaning and have never taken the time to hand wash something. If I fall in love with something that is either, it has to be cheap incase it gets destroyed in the wash (normally under $4).

I love her beautiful natural hair! I always was the odd one in my family, loving going to goodwill and diving through. Blogging opened me up to so many like-minded folks!
